What's In my Crochet Bag?

Every Crocheter has their own version of a "Mary Poppins bag" filled to the brim with yarn, hooks, and all of the little odds and ends that make creating possible. My crochet bag is part survival kit, part mobile studio, and part comfort blanket. If I'm headed to the doctor's office, a friend's house, a road trip, or even just a drive for longer than 30 minutes, you can bet it's coming with me. So, what exactly lives in there? Let's unzip the bag and take a look!
First, The Bag!
Obviously the bag is extremely important. This past Christmas, My grandma got me a yarn bag that has some grommet holes in the top that allows the yarn to come out! It has a few pockets on the inside if you need to separate the yarn, but other that that there's just a pencil-pouch-looking bag that lives on a little hook on the side with a carabiner attached. That's where the chaos really lives.
Obviously, the Yarn!
The heart of my crochet bag is my yarn. But I don't just throw in a few random skeins, it's usually whatever project I'm working on, or one that will be completed in the time that I'll be out of the house, with very little in between time. That usually means that I have a neutral color on lock and ready to go, a bright color to keep me on my toes, and whatever half finished skein I'm in denial about finishing up, just to see what I can do with it.
Gotta Have a Hook!
Again, for Christmas, I was given a crochet hook that has changeable heads for all different sizes, and it also lights up, so I usually figure out what size I'm going to need for my yarn before I leave the house, attach that to the base, and pop it in my little pouch! I will bring a few different metal hooks once in a while, but those are usually just on hand in case i drop my hook under my car seat and I can't reach it until I get out of the car, honestly.
Who Doesn't Love a Good Stitch Marker?
I honestly rarely use stitch markers, but when I do, I'm severely glad that I have them. I have a whole thing of them and considering I rarely use them, I don't mind having a few that I won't mind losing that are in the little bag. I also have two Bobby Pins in there, just in case I lose my stitch marker and don't have anything, but need them!
Scissors and Yarn Needles
Obviously, you're going to need something to snip off your yarn, or you're going to end up biting or tearing your yarn off in public like an animal. Just grab a small pair of scissors (genuinely, I think mine are out of an old manicure set and I washed them) and leave them in there honey, I promise it'll make life a lot easier! As for the yarn needles, I honestly keep all of mine in the bag at all times, so then I know where they are. None of them are super sharp, but I keep them in a little tube anyway, so that way they all stay in one place and are less likely to spill out all over the floor!
Comfort Items
I always keep an extra hair tie on hand, one of my biggest pet peeves is having hair in my face while I'm trying to work! And I try my absolute hardest to not have everyone take a piece of my hair with them in their project, so having a hair tie on hand is always a must! Also, there are times that I need my reading glasses because my head hurts or I'm going to be using a yarn that's hard to see, so in those cases, I usually like to have my glasses on me!
Lastly, the Project
Obviously, the most important thing, is whatever I'm working on! Right now, I've been working on a t-shirt dress in the size Large to replace one that I had placed on order for my market! My crochet bag never has the same project in it for very long, but sometimes it has

two in it because I can get bored of working on the same larger project for a long time.
Why Does it Matter?
Carrying my crochet bag feels like I'm carrying a little piece of my business wherever I go. It's part creativity, part comfort, part identity, but mostly it's something I'm incredibly proud of. It hold not just yarn and hooks, but at the very least, the possibility of turning a slow moment into something meaningful. So if you see me lugging around a weird little cylindrical bag, know that it's not just "stuff" but it's my creative life and my livelihood, packed and ready to go, one stitch at a time.
Peace, Love, and All the Above,
Ella Marie <3
